In short

Qaari is a browser extension that renders a translation over pages you open yourself. Balloon detection and optical character recognition run on your machine. What leaves your device is the text extracted from balloons, so it can be translated.

We do not sell your data, use it for advertising, or train models on it.

What is sent to our servers

When you ask for a page to be translated we receive: the text extracted from its text regions, the glossary for that series, and a downscaled image of the page (at most 1024px on its longest edge) used to determine who is speaking and in what tone.

That data is passed to a language model provider to produce the translation and returned to you. We do not store page text or page images once the request completes.

What stays on your device

The per-series glossary is held in your browser (IndexedDB) and is sent to our servers only as part of a translation request itself.

Your settings, and your account key if you have one, are kept in the extension's local storage.

Permissions

Qaari requests access to each site the first time you use it there, rather than a blanket grant across all sites. That access is needed to read the images shown on the page and to draw the translation layer over them.

We do not read pages you have not asked to translate, and we do not track your browsing.

Accounts and billing

If you create an account we keep your email address, your plan, and the number of pages translated in the current period, in order to apply usage limits.

Payments are processed by Stripe. We never receive or store your card details.

Retention and deletion

Usage records are retained for support and accounting. You may request deletion of your account and everything associated with it by contacting us; requests are completed within thirty days.

Content

Qaari is a viewer that operates on what you open in your own browser. We do not host, distribute, or own rights to any content.
